How We Research

Updated on

Every guide on PrudentPail starts with one question: will this product work for the person who is shopping for it? For our hose reel guides, that means your yard, your hose and where you plan to put the reel.

Here is how we answer it.

1. We start with your yard and your hose

A wall-mount reel, a ground-mount reel and a wheeled cart suit different yards. A short hose by a deck needs something different from 150 feet of hose around a house.

We check the hose length and hose size each reel is made for, how it mounts and whether the hose is included. When your space or your hose limits the choice, we say what to measure first.

2. We compare specs and features

We look at the frame material, the swivel and fittings, the rewind mechanism, the mounting bracket and how many feet of hose the reel holds. For carts we look at the wheels, the handle and the frame.

Giraffe Tools, VEVOR and other makers describe their reels in their own words, so we name the brand for every claim. We also note the warranty terms the maker lists.

3. We look at buyer feedback

We read through what buyers report after using a reel. We look for patterns, like leaks at the swivel, a spring that stops retracting, brackets that don't fit or carts that tip when the hose is full.

One angry review doesn't sink a product. A pattern does.

4. We score each product

Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A reel that's great for a short hose on a deck may score lower in a guide written for 150 feet of hose.

Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.

5. We keep pages up to date

Products change, and some disappear from stores. Many hose reels come in several lengths and hose sizes with similar names, and some share one set of buyer reviews, so we check each model name and size, and we only link new units.

When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.

What our picks are not

Our picks are research, not lab tests. We don't claim to have used every reel we cover.

A spring reel can pull a hose back fast, and a loaded reel needs a secure mount. Follow the maker's manual for mounting and use, and never open the spring housing.

We make no claim that a hose or reel is safe for drinking water. When a maker makes a claim, we label it as the maker's claim.
